Productivity Polarization and Sectoral Dynamics in European Regions

2007

Abstract We show that the distribution dynamics of productivity in European regions displays polarization with a nonlinear growth path. We investigate the factors explaining this behavior focusing in particular on sectoral composition. The β -convegence analysis reveals that initial shares of Manufacturing and Other Market Services have a nonlinear impact on growth, while spatial effects are not statistically significant. By decomposing the dynamics of aggregate productivity in terms of sectoral dynamics, we show that productivity in Manufacturing, Non Market Services, and Other Market Services does not converge, for the complex interaction of technological spillovers and specialization eff…

LA POLITICA ORDINARIA E DI COESIONE NELLE REGIONI ITALIANE: UNA VALUTAZIONE SETTORIALE SUL FUNZIONAMENTO DEL PRINCIPIO DI ADDIZIONALITA'

2022

This paper analyses the degree of additionality of the Cohesion Policy to ordinary domestic spending in the Italian NUTS-2 regions during the last two programming periods (2007-2013 and 2014-2020). The European Commission has established that the Structural Funds must not be used to replace the disbursement of the Member States to the regions. However, the treatment could distort the allocative choices of the national policy maker. The main element of novelty is the ex-post panel evaluation of cohesion funds’ additionality to the Ordinary Policy through a sectoral breakdown of spending, controlling for the potential endogeneity of the cohesion variable. The sectoral approach allows us to as…

Changes in Spatial and Sectoral Patterns of Employment in Ile-de-France, 1978-97

2006

This paper investigates the spatial distribution of employment in the region of Ile-de-France in 1978 and 1997. Exploratory spatial data analysis is used to identify employment centres and a sectoral analysis of the central business district (CBD) and sub-centres is performed. The results highlight a process of suburbanisation of employment in Ile-de-France between 1978 and 1997. A more polarised space emerges in 1997 than in 1978, with several employment centres specialised in different activities. Moreover, even if the spatial influence of the CBD declines over the study period, the CBD maintains its economic leadership by concentrating a large variety of high-order producer services.

Pnnr e le economie del turismo in Italia: disparità inter ed infra regionali e politiche di ripresa e resilienza

2022

The Italian regions show marked differences in the pattern of tourism development. These disparities can be offset by implementing a common plan supporting recovery and strengthening its resilience to external shocks. This article aims to offer a deepening of the NRPV concerning the economies of tourism and, following a regional analysis, to verify the current disparities and the initiatives of the plan to overcome them. An analysis of the Italian regions on the supply and demand front is proposed using synthetic indices of endowment and the presence of tourist demand to compare the articulation of specificities at the sub-regional level. Finally, some guidelines are suggested on policies f…
